Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! I hate to do this one. Destroys my physiological state to do this one. No, it doesn’t feel so great to do this one. But do this one I shall. Credit is due to one Derek Sanderson Jeter. Credit is due to the Captain. O Captain my Captain! Our fearful trip is done. The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won. No, nothing is done. No, the prize has not yet been won. But if Derek Jeter has anything to say it about it, things will be done. Things will be won.
We all know about Jeter’s past heroics. We all know about his career .309 postseason batting average with 17 home runs and 49 RBIs. We all know about his Major League Baseball record 153 career postseason hits and his records for most postseason singles, at-bats and runs scored. We all saw what he did against the Padres, Braves and Mets. He will ever be remembered for this: That is fair, down the right field line. Giambi on his way to third, and they’re gonna wave him around! The throw misses the cutoff man — shovel to the plate! Out at the plate! Derek Jeter with one of the most unbelievable plays you will ever see by a shortstop!
All that would be enough for any man. Derek Jeter is not any man. If you have five dollars and Derek Jeter has five dollars, Derek Jeter has more money than you. Derek Jeter can kill two stones with one bird. When Derek Jeter falls in water, Derek Jeter doesn’t get wet. Water gets Derek Jeter. All of it.
Last night, the legend continued. Early last night, the Yankees icon went 2-for-2 with a home run. Early last night, the Yankees icon went 2-for-2 with two RBI, three runs scored and two walks in New York’s 7-2 win over the Twins in Game One of the Division Series. Hooray Derek Jeter!
Know this baseballiophiles: Only two other players in Yankees postseason history have had a game in which they had at least four plate appearances, reaching base safely in each; scored at least three runs; had at least two RBIs; and hit a home run. In fact, two pretty famous players in two pretty famous games at that.
In Game Four of the 1926 World Series at St. Louis, Babe Ruth became the first player to hit three home runs in a World Series game, doing so in only three at-bats, with two walks, four runs scored and four RBIs. And in Game Six of the 1977 World Series against the Dodgers, Reggie Jackson became the only player other than Ruth to hit three homers in a World Series game, also doing so in only three at-bats, with a walk, four runs scored and five RBI.
Yes sports fans, I hate Derek Jeter. I hate him with every fiber of my being. But all that hate does not change what that cat is done doing. I’d be a fool not to take notice. I’d be missing a legend.
